"In the middle ages, the inquisitors burned bodies at the
stake
supposedly to save souls. In our time psychiatrists, the
modern
counterparts of the inquisitors, burn brains with
electroshock
supposedly to save minds. Society now recognizes the
violence
that was done fraudulently to millions of people in the
name of
salvation centuries ago; it still doesn't recognize the
violence that
is being done fraudulently in our own time to millions of
people
in the name of mental health. But the conscience of
society will
not sleep forever. Indeed, the very fact of these public
hearings is
a sign of its awakening."
